Keppra (levetiracetam) - Antiepileptic drug, a derivative of pyrrolidone (S-enantiomer of α-ethyl-2-oxo-1-pyrrolidine-acetamide), differs in chemical structure from known antiepileptic drugs.The mechanism of action of levetiracetam is not fully understood, but it is clear that it differs from the mechanism of action of known antiepileptic drugs.
Safety information
Keppra is prescribed for:
- partial seizures with secondary generalization;
- partial seizures without secondary generalization;
- myoclonic seizures associated with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy;
- primary-generalized tonic-clonic seizures.
Mode of application
Adults and teenagers over 16years.The medicine is administered in the form of tablets or a solution for oral administration at an initial dose of 500 mg divided into 2 divided doses (250 mg twice daily).After 2 weeks, the dose may be increased to the initial therapeutic dose - 1 g (500 mg 2 times/day).The maximum daily dose is 3 g (1.5 g 2 times/day).
Keppra is not prescribed when:
- indications in patients up to 4 years (for tablet form);
- indications for newborns (for solution);
- intolerance to fructose (for solution);
- hypersensitivity to levetiracetam;
- hypersensitivity to pyrrolidinones derived;
- allergies to auxiliary components of dosage forms.
Side effects
The usage of Keppra can be accompanied by asthenic syndrome, ataxia, pruritus, paresthesia, anorexia, leukopenia, hallucinations, diplopia, amnesia, insomnia, skin rash, behavioral disorders, depression, hepatic insufficiency, vomiting, decreased concentration, anxiety, pancreatitis, alopecia, Nausea, disorder of accommodation, drowsiness, dyspepsia, suicidal mood, hyperkinesia, convulsions, dizziness, diarrhea, coughing, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, tremor, weight gain, myalgia, headache, eczematous eruptions, neutropenia, emotional lability, erythema multiforme, disturbances of balance, excitement, hepatitis, personality disorder, pancytopenia, aggression, abdominal pain, slimming, irritability, thrombocytopenia, nasopharyngitis, toxic epidermal necrolysis, nervousness and thinking disability.
